Unofficial sources say that Romania’s candidate for the post of EU commissioner has been given the Agriculture portfolio in the new Commission managed by Barroso. Dacian Ciolos would become the European Union Commissioner for Agriculture in early 2010, when the new Commission will take office.
With a degree in economy of agricultural development, Ciolos has been Romania’s agricultural minister from October 2007 to December 2008. From his position as EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dacian Ciolos will manage one of the biggest budget of the EU. The Common Agriculture Policy is one of the oldest and most integrated policies of the European Union and takes a large share of the Union’s budget, which has notwithstanding dropped from nearly 70% in the 1970s to 34% over the financial framework 2007-2013.
