A black thick smoke is rising from Schuman Square, the central point of the European quarter in Brussels. Right between the main building of the European Commission (Berlaymont) and the European Council, farmers from several Member States of the European Union are protesting against the reduction of the milk quotas that the Union wants to impose.
The heart of the European quarter is blocked for hours. Policemen forbid people to pass by. This puts a strain on the starting of the “Open Days of the Regions and Cities of Europe”, which is supposed to take place in the Berlaymont building from today until Friday.
Schuman Square is the usual scene of protests in Brussels. Today’s protest of the European farmers seems to be one of the most serious and impressive ones both for Brussels’ residents and for the Belgian authorities.
