What’s the use the Members of the European parliament did of new media before the election campaign and what’s the use they do now?
How did members of the European parliament use new media before the election campaign, and how do they use it now?

She used social media during the election campaign in Italy, and she’s still using it; principally she’s on Facebook.
Debora has two kind of pages:
1) a page “just for fun”, with794 members.
2) a personal page, with 31.229 friends.
Speaking about her page, we can observe that it’s written just in Italian, so it’s not possible for other people from other countries to participate in the debate. This means she’s a MEP, but at the same time she’s oriented towards national politics. It’s important to note that on her pages she states that she answers every question and “post” personally.
We can observe that a lot of people use her pages as a stage to share opinion and debate. People use it daily, and it’s possible to follow the development of these exchanges of information hour by hour, or minute by minute.
Netherlands

Born on 28 October 1978, Leiden
marietje.schaake@europarl.europa.eu
She use social media, and in particular:
Twitter: @MarietjeD66
On facebook she has a page “just for fun”, where there are 91 fans.
Her page is only written in Dutch, so it’s not possible for other people from other countries to participate in debates. This means she’s a MEP, but she’s mostly involved into her own activities in the Netherlands.
People who use her pages can see it’s very personal and friendly, but at the same time it seems to be somewhat irrelevant from a political point of view.
It’s important to note that the last time our MEP wrote on her page was June 11, 2009 at 11.38, when she discovered she had been elected to the parliament.

Hi Paolo, and other readers of Youngjournalism. I am glad to see you are focused on European politics and the behavior of politicians! New media provide exciting opportunities for interaction between politicians and people all over Europe. It is therefore that I am setting up an Intergroup on New Media and Technology in the European Parliament.
I would like to let you know however that my Facebook Fanpage is and was not kept by myself, I do have a personal page which I update almost daily in both English and Dutch (http://www.facebook.com/marietjeschaake). Furthermore I am active on Twitter, also in English and Dutch (see @MarietjeD66).
If you measure the activity on my Facebook page and on Twitter again, looking at before and after the elections, please let me know your findings!
Kind regards,
Marietje Schaake
