We tried a sort of experiment: a survey made using our Facebook status. Our aim is to discover the feelings about Europe of the people who use social media every day. By typing a question on our profile, we got answers, ideas, opinions from our contacts. In the following lines we report some comments, with the name and the nationality of the contact.
Our Status – What is Europe for you?
Hope
Gilberto – Italy
It’s simply the only possible future!
Laura – Italy
The European Union is a hope to me, the hope that one day things in Italy will change thanks to it.
Coexistence
Simon – Germany
Europe is a community of states, people and ideas for a better coexistence.
Mauro – Italy
It’s an example of peaceful coexistence and cooperation between peoples and countries with different cultures.
Being European
Roberto – Italy
EU is a step forward to awareness of being European… although we still need to build up an European conscience: that’s one of the crucial goal of XXI century in Europe.
Fragility
Cecilia – Italy
Is the construction site of an extremely fragile and still fragmented mechanism, so called Europe, to which it is trying to give a coherent “official” shape on the basis of the common application of democracy.
Marius – Germany
A loose arrangement of too many states that struggles to articulate a common will. In theory it’s a quite impressive and tempting approach, though.
Necessity
Alice – Italy
An historical necessity and a great idea. Unfortunately in Italy it’s seen as a bureaucratic institution distant from its citizens.
Opportunity
Nicolò – Italy
Something that makes life easier and gives us many additional opportunities.
Mihaela – Romania
On a first thought, easier travelling and multicultural experiences.
Wealth
Elisabeth – Belgium
Europe is a big economical cooperation, and the idea of “together we are stronger”.
Useful rules
Eugenio – Italy
As I see it, European Union is similar to the rules which your parents tell you when you are a child: they become clear when you’re grown up but, at the same moment, you need them to grow up.
Looking for the right definition
Rafal – Poland
Democratic cover for socialistic actions. I’m not against it, they should just call things according to their nature.
Gilles – Belgium
Greater power on the international scene but lots of constraints for all the members. It’s just like a big country in which all the countries are department.
